Clinical activities The Department of Clinical Chemistry of the University Hospital of Liege realizes yearlymore then 5.3 million of analyses for out and in-­‐patients, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Next to these routine analyses, the Department of Clincial Chemsitry also offers specialized services through its R&D section: these services encompass clinical and analytical evaluations of biomarkers, constitution of special well characterized serum banks and expertise in different fields like hormonology, bone and turnover markers, allergology, renal stones and cristalluria, auto-­‐immunity, cardiac markers and oxidative stress. The Collaborators and Laboratories of the Department of Clincal Chiemistry also serves as references in phosphocalic metabolism, in-­‐vitro allergy diagnostic, auto-­‐immunity diagnostic, electrophoresis and immunofixatons, renal stones, oxidative stress and cardiac markers. Most of the analyses performed by our laboratories are ISO 15189. 6. Main research areas The Clinical Chemistry team has developed 5 major research areas. (1)Quantification of steroids in serum, plasma, urine and saliva by LCMS/MS (2)Validation of different methods for 25(OH) vitamin D determination (3) Laboratory contribution to the care of renal stone diseases : kidney stone is a common disease, and analyzing it leads to informations about patient’s pathology. That’s why we’re trying to improve stone analysis, such as with Raman spectrometry. We’re also evaluating effect of a multidisciplinary long term management, and we investigate effect of vitamin D in urolithiasis patients (4)Innovative approach using sheathless CE-­‐MS/MS for the quantification of hormones in native form: the goal of this project is to develop reliable quantification methods for parathyroid hormone and serum free vitamin D in their native forms, using immunoaffinity-­‐based sample preparation and capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry using a sheathless interface (5)Cardiac markers: The aim of the project is to study the new necrosis and fibrosis cardiac biomarkers in athletes (runners) to show the specificity of them or not. A second goal is to highlight a cardiac biomarker which could be use to know if there is a risk to develop a cardiac event during the exercise 7. Expert services / competencies •
