PRESS RELEASE FEBRUARY 2016 RENCUENTROS COMUNES Y FRACTARIOS, OIL ON CANVAS ,200 X200 CM The Latest Works of Juan Carlos Zeballos
by Elena Deem, PhD
Zeballos’ richly complex canvases are produced from his memories and
sketches of his quotidian encounters with metropolitan environments.
Infused with references to graffiti and wall inscriptions, his works investigate
the city inhabitants’ anonymous endeavor to thus register momentous
experience and to iterate their existence.
Zeballos examines these fleeting records as the contemporary equivalents of the
ancient message of “paso por aquí” (I have been here). The half-erased symbols
and letters now figure as aborted attempts at communication on the
decentralized surfaces of Zeballos’ oils and watercolors, where he combines the
fragmenting urban narratives with classic gestural abstraction and a fearless
color palette. Fields of vivid color, inscriptions, and layered fragments move to
the varying rhythms of his brushstrokes. Fractions of planes of color with low
chromatic value are applied in random patterns, alternately generating flatness
and fractured perspectives. The resulting vertiginous composition of each work
constantly challenges the eye in an intense, optical joyride into the city
underground. At the same time, Zeballos re-discovers the poetry of the ruin of
the image such as seen on ripped advertisement boards. Stripped of meaning, the
formerly consequential layers of posters constitute their own time-space
continuum: collages whose fragments point to the original images but whose
haphazard emergence creates transient realities as they compose and decompose
themselves in front of the eye. In Zeballos’ paintings, these ruins of
advertisement and announcements signpost the realities of perpetual destruction
and regeneration of today’s cultural icons: the fluctuating scars on the skin of
the city. Zeballos’ painterly records explore the endless metamorphoses of the
urban environments that remain largely unnoticed by the rushing crowds. Yet,
like an assemblage of kaleidoscopic images seen from a Paris metro train,
Zeballos’ works touch the essence of our daily urban experience: of that which
has gotten under our skin as ever-recurring memories.
A catalogue will be edited for the exhibition.
