AP French - Arlington Public Schools

IntégréTéléchargement
juin 2016 Dear Students and Parents, I am very excited and honored to be your AP French teacher this coming school year! In order to prepare for this course I have prepared several assignments for you to complete during the summer, the first of which is to join our APS Google Classroom; our
group code is zd43ooc
. While this packet will thoroughly explain each and every assignment, I will use Google Classroom to post the weekly assignments, as well as the due dates. If you miss a due date, you will receive a “0” (ZERO) for that portion of the assignment. Your first assignment after joining the Google Classroom is to join REMIND. To incorporate each aspect of language acquisition (listening, speaking, reading, & writing), you will be asked to do a variety of assignments: video introduction (and reactions), article & movie summaries, journals, a proficiency test (graded ONLY on completion), and vocabulary acquisition. You can find a description of each assignment (with approximate due dates) below. VOCABULARY BUILDING – ongoing, quiz SEPTEMBER 78 ● Use the following quizlet website to learn 65 common French phrases. You will have a vocabulary quiz (you will be given the English word and will have to write the French word) on the first “regular” day of school, September 78. This will be your first quiz grade. You can make flashcards, play the quizlet games, etc.:
https://quizlet.com/_2axokn JOURNAL ENTRIES – 3 total, due dates/topics vary; journal #1 due JULY 1 (others JULY 29, AUG 19) ● You will be required to write 3 journals,
en français, bien sûr,
on varying topics this summer. Each journal is to be a minimum of 100 words. You will submit these electronically on Google Classroom. ➢ JOURNAL 1
VIDEO INTRODUCTION – due JULY 8; reactions due JULY 15 ● Post an introductory video of yourself,
en français, bien sûr
to introduce yourself to your classmates. Tell them about yourself (basic information) and your likes and dislikes. Tell them what you are going to do (or hope to do) this summer
AND
one thing that you DID (passé composé) over the 4th of July Weekend. Additionally, tell them what you hope to achieve next year in AP French class. Lastly, talk to them about a passion of yours that is centered on one of the six global themes (feel free to use a dictionary or wordreference.com to look up unknown words). Your video should be 12 minutes long. This will be a SPEAKING grade! ● In addition to the introductory video, you MUST comment (in written form,
en français
) on two different classmates’ videos (this will all be done in the Google Classroom forum). You must react to what they say and ask them questions about what they talked about. Lastly, you MUST respond to anyone who comments on your video. (This portion of the assignment will be due JULY 15.) This will be a LISTENING/WRITING grade. ARTICLE SUMMARIES – 3 total, due dates vary; article #1 due JULY 22 (others AUGUST 12, 26) ● You will be required to read 3 French articles throughout the summer and submit an outline for each article (see attached for instructions). Be sure to include the link to the article when you “turn in” (electronically) your assignment. If you miss the due date, you will receive a “0” for that portion of your 1 grade. You may choose your articles from
www.tv5monde.com
OR
www.rfi.fr
.
Remember:

Google Translate is NOT your friend!
I would much rather see “broken” and grammatically incorrect French and know that you did this on your own, than to read something that has been translated or copied directly from the article, which will result in a grade of
“0”
. FRENCH PROFICIENCY TEST – due AUGUST 5 ● Take the proficiency test to see how much French you remember; this will be graded on completion ONLY. Please do this without any outside assistance since the grade is for completion ONLY. Take a screen shot of your score to upload on Google classroom upon completion. This will be a small ASSESSMENT grade. ●
http://www.transparent.com/learnfrench/proficiencytest.html MOVIE REVIEWS – 2 total; movie test SEPTEMBER 78 ● The film genre is a very powerful way to experience language. You will be
required
to watch and review (complete the movie review form)
2 of the 7
movies listed. Attached to this letter is the description of five movies. You will also have the opportunity to view ONE of the bonus films (for extra credit). Check all of the following resources to view these movies: local library, Netflix, Amazon Prime, or YouTube. You may have to purchase them from another venue (
www.amazon.ca
is a great and inexpensive resource); I would encourage several of you to make it a party and watch together!
Some of these movies will range in ratings from G to PG13 and some will have no rating but have content similar to PG or PG13.
Because of the nature of foreign films, I urge you to
please consult your parents before viewing a nonrated film. ● You will have a test on the movies you watched on the first days of school, so please watch the movies!
Choosing NOT to watch the movies will cause you to have one of your first grades in my class a failing one. Take as many notes as you like to help prepare you for the test. You are not limited to just the outline. It may be helpful to watch the movie for the first time in the beginning of summer, and to review the movie a second time before school starts.
