9th RCPPM meeting
A partnership CICRP - RCPPM
Knowledge, preservation and restoration of
medieval painted ceilings in Europe: methods and
scientific approaches
MARSEILLE,
29-30 septembre 2016
FREJUS
1er octobre 2016
With the cooperation of the Archives of the City of Marseille
1
The medieval painted ceilings became for several years a new topic for art historians,
archeologists, historians of Middle Age, delivering iconographies, lifestyle over a period
more famous through religious or military stone buildings.
Investigations and studies were launched and the international association of skeletons
and painted ceiling (RCPPM) offers a great support to contribute of knowledge and also
in the raising awareness of public and private owners confronted with such discoveries.
With this enthusiasm appear the delicate questions of preservation, with their peculiar
and complex components: size, weight, material, climate, environment, its preservation
in situ or to take down.
Two days will be dedicated to these multidisciplinary approaches through the archives,
the scientific investigations as well as the scientific imaging to better know the materials
and preserve and restore these “domestics covers”.
The third day, the visit of the Fréjus cathedral cloister ceiling will demonstrate an
appropriate application.
These meeting will also show the awareness’s and the policy which appeared since
around thirty years to insure theirs transmission and this in various European countries
