Serious conferences have been organised to analyze and list out the advantages of the LMD system which some experts perceive as the only way to reach the universal level. Yet, at present time English teaching at the Algerian university is witnessing a serious decline. Available evidence points to the following symptoms: the lack of students’ motivation, interest and autonomy, and students’ low linguistic competence. As a matter of fact, students, even at the third Licence level or Master level, find themselves struggling to express concepts that are often dimly understood. The result is all too often garbled and incoherent discourse. On the other hand, teaching also gives cause for concern: each subject is rigidly compartmentalized with no commitment to integrated curricula; teacher- centred work; a general preoccupation with the theoretical academic side of ELT rather than practical aspects which could be put out into immediate use; language assessment focuses on discrete-point tests with no assessment format to profile students’ growth and change; lack of effective use of the new technologies… Following the above diagnosis, which is not a comprehensive one, ELT in our university is ill and in need of revitalization. Thus, this seminar aims at treating and implementing the different methodologies for English teaching at our university, and sorting out the appropriate techniques and methods for a better evaluation. Other topics may be considered, we welcome paper proposals dealing with, but not being limited to, issues such as the following: Teaching the four skills: methods and principles that underpin successful teaching.
